Stow Conservation Commission seeks member

Interested in getting more involved in protecting Stow’s wetlands and open spaces and learning more about the town? The Stow Conservation Commission is seeking a member to join a collegial and hard-working volunteer board in Stow. The Commission meets on the first and third Tuesday night of every month (currently via Zoom). Members also participate in occasional site visits and help with projects between meetings. The Conservation Commission administers and enforces the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and the Town of Stow Wetlands Protection Bylaw and Regulations. The Commission reviews work within 100 feet of a wetlands and 200 feet of streams and ponds (100’ on Lake Boon). The Commission also guides management of more than 1,500 acres of town conservation land throughout the community.

The ideal candidate is interested in protecting the environment and has a background or interest in environmental science, law/policy, real estate, land use, planning, engineering or similar disciplines, but anyone can serve so long as they are willing to become familiar with the laws and regulations that the Commission works with. The Town of Stow is seeking a part-time, temporary Citizen Science Coordinator for a two-year paid position coordinating volunteers participating in an assessment of water quality issues at Lake Boon under a Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness grant.
