2023 Lake Boon Photo Calendar

We are still looking for good photos to include in next year’s calendar as well as estimates on the quantity of calendars to order. If you are interested and haven’t already done so, please respond to either or both solicitations below.

A 2023 Lake Boon Association photo wall calendar, 8 x 11″, will be similar to the past two years. They will again be $20 each and are planned for availability by Thanksgiving weekend. If you plan (not a commitment) to purchase calendar(s), please contact Dave Gray at grayscale@earthlink.net with the number you might buy so we can estimate the quantity to order and place you on a priority list. Proceeds benefit the Lake Boon Association.

If you have high quality photo(s) taken on or near Lake Boon and would be willing to donate their use to be considered for the LBA calendar, please send them to Dave Gray at the above address before Nov 1st. Dave can accept emails with less than 15 MB of attachments. If you have more than that, please use a file sharing application, send in separate emails or provide a USB flash memory stick.

Photo selection priorities include:

• Quality—resolution, focus, clarity
• Scenery, preferably identifiable as Lake Boon
• Wildlife
• Recreation
• Seasonally appropriate for each month of the year
• Uniqueness

Lake level drawdown update

The first board has been removed from the dam outfall so the lake level will gradually drop about a foot over the next month. Consider moving boats and scheduling waterfront maintenance accordingly. Note that it is illegal to move leaves or other yard debris into the lake where it would contribute phosphorus, adding to next year’s weed and algae growth. Always rake or blow away from the waterfront.

Fall discount septic pumping: sign up deadline is November 4

The Lake Boon Association is proud to be sponsoring a discount septic pumping program again this fall. The program will run beginning the week of November 7-18. The deadline to sign up is Friday November 4.

The program is open to anyone living within the Lake Boon watershed or within a mile of the lake.

Since the inception of this program many holding tanks have been pumped at the discount price, saving money for individual homeowners while preserving property values and helping reduce weed growth in the lake.

The more frequently a system is pumped (recommendation every 1 – 2 years depending on family size), the longer it will last and work well. The LBA sponsors this program spring and fall each year, and so far Rich Casaceli continues to give us excellent service.

Sustainable Stow/Randall Library speaker series looks at electric vehicles

On Wednesday, October 19^th Sustainable Stow and Randall Library will hold a special presentation on electric vehicles with Anna Vanderspek, the EV program director at Green Energy Consumers Alliance (GECA). The talk will cover environmental and consumer benefits, information about batteries and charging, state and federal incentives, and more. There will be plenty of time to answer your questions. GECA is a non-profit organization focusing on consumer power to speed the transition to a low-carbon future.

Last month Sustainable Stow and the Randall Library concluded their series of sessions on local water concerns by meeting with Rep. Kate Hogan, who shared recent developments on PFAS at the state level. You can see a video of that talk on Stow TV here: https://youtu.be/j1F2MVjBOto

Lake Boon History Walk on October 15

Come out for the Lake Boon History Walk Saturday, October 15, starting at the Stow Pine Bluffs/Town Beach on Sudbury Road. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with step off at noon. Bring neighbors and friends to enjoy crisp air and fall colors during the 5-mile stroll or power walk around the lake.

Learn the fascinating background of various sites around the lake, including two train stops, steam and gasoline-powered ferry docks, a 21-room hotel, private clubs, the infamous Monahan’s and more. The history walk includes twenty posters with historical photos plus additional signs with reminders of environmental issues that affect the lake and what we can do to protect it. A $5.00 donation to the LBA is requested.

LBA shirts, hats, bags and stickers plus Richard Gelpke’s 275-page Lake Boon History book will be available for purchase at the start–a great opportunity for early holiday shopping.

Put on your comfortable walking shoes, wear bright clothing for safety and come on down!
